COBOL Expert

AfterQuery is seeking COBOL Experts to create and refine legacy systems programming challenges for training AI models. In this remote, flexible role, you will design and evaluate COBOL scenarios that test the AI's ability to interpret and apply legacy programming principles, ensuring that our models can navigate real-world mainframe development, system maintenance, and enterprise application challenges with precision and technical accuracy. Your expertise will help bridge the gap between proven COBOL programming practice and innovative AI solutions, making a tangible impact on the future of legacy systems technology.

Commitment: 10 hours/week | Pay: $200 - $250/hr | Type: Contract

Responsibilities

• Develop high-quality COBOL programming questions and case studies that challenge AI models on topics such as data division structures, procedure logic, file handling, database operations, error handling, performance optimization, and more.
• Evaluate and validate model responses, offering detailed feedback to ensure technical accuracy and adherence to COBOL programming best practices.
• Collaborate with a team of programming and technical experts to fine-tune question difficulty and ensure content is both challenging and educational.

Required Qualifications

• Proven experience in COBOL programming with a robust understanding of mainframe systems and enterprise applications.
• Strong knowledge of COBOL syntax, file processing, database integration (DB2, IMS, VSAM), and batch processing.
• Exceptional analytical, written, and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.

Preferred Qualifications

• Multiple years of COBOL development experience, ideally in banking, insurance, government, or enterprise environments.
• Experience with JCL (Job Control Language), CICS, and mainframe utilities.
• Prior involvement in system modernization, migration projects, or legacy system maintenance.
• Knowledge of structured programming principles and debugging complex COBOL applications is a plus.
• Familiarity with AI or technology-driven legacy system applications is a plus.
